Alix Kates Shulman

Alix Kates Shulman is a feminist, political activist and writer of fiction, memoirs, and essays. Shulman was one of the early radical activists of second-wave feminism and In 1967 she joined the new Women’s Liberation Movement (WLM), becoming a member of the early groups New York Radical Women, Redstockings, WITCH, and New York Radical Feminists. Her bestselling debut adult novel, Memoirs of an Ex-Prom Queen was one of the first novels to emerge from the movement.

Shulman helped to plan the first national demonstration of WLM, the 1968 Miss America Pageant Protest in Atlantic City, advocated for abortion rights through speak-outs, street theater, and protest marches and supported FACT (Feminists Against Censorship Taskforce) during the “sex wars” of the 1980s. She continues to fight sexism, racism, ageism, and the earth’s destruction in her writing, speaking, and in the streets.
